best question ever

I have a z3 compact. I want to extend battery life and reduce data usage by not allowing the phone to automatically check emails or software updates etc. Is there a way to prevent apps running in the background or the operating system itself from doing this at its own accord? I don't want to have to turn the internet on and off each time I want to use it.

I do a lot of driving and access google maps quite frequently so I would want it to work as soon as I open it but I wouldn't want to have things like internet or GPS on all the time. Also simple things like browsing the web... I would want the browser to work straight away.

Why aren't smartphones designed like this by default? Sure, sometimes you don't want to manually check your emails but other times you would. And why has Sony decided to ruin an otherwise great phone with so much bloatware?
