There is a sensor on the device called proximity sensor that will turn the display off when it's covered during a call and will turn the screen on when it's no longer covered. If this sensor is covered by a case/screen protector, it will not know that you have taken the device down from your ear and the screen will not turn on.

On the link below, you can see where the sensor is placed on the device. Make sure that there is no moisture/dirt on the sensor or that anything is covering it. It's number 7 on the link.

You can also do the inbuilt test for the sensor which you can find in Settings > Support > Xperia tests > Proximity.
