So far it only happens to two types of apps: browsers (chrome, firefox, opera beta) and games (pokemon go, modern combat 5, etc).

What happens is that when I have the app on the screen, I press the power button to put the phone to sleep then press it again to wake the phone up...it goes back to the app fine. But if I do the same thing the SECOND TIME (sleep then wake), the screen turns black (status bar and navigation bar still visible). I have to switch the app away then switch back, for the screen to show up. With games, the black screen is full-screen; but with browsers, the black screen is restricted to the webpage area.

I never use any form of lock screen. I tried to add a "swipe to unlock" lockscreen and the problem doesnt occur. So the problem only happens when the phone wakes from sleep and go straight to the app without any lock screen in between. Also, I would say that more than 90% of the time it happens during the second sleep-wake action, but sometimes it can happen on the third or fourth.

I have now installed all the overdue monthly system updates to the latest version (april 2019) and the problem still persists. Anyone has a solution? Thank you.

Well .. this is not that kind of a serious issue. It happens because of the way interaction between running application on memory and going deep sleep. I tried it doesn't happen for me and only one time browser hanged for a second or two then resumed. For games black screen might appear when trying to resume the gaming session. It's kind of android thing.

Solution is I recommend that before going to sleep, press home button to home screen and then switch to sleep and when wakes up go to recent and resume your application.

In case of gaming, first pause the game, return to home screen and sleep, then wake up, go recent and resume game.

It looks like when I tried, the problem occurs only if u immediately try to wake up phone 2nd or 3rd time after u put to sleep... If u give enough time for the phone to manage your session , it will work without problem.

It never happened when I was on android 8, and it certainly is a big issue. Also for me it doesnt have to be successive sleep-wake within a short time frame to induce this problem.

Problem is e.g. for games like pokemon go, we need to constantly off and on the screen. And having black screen like this and having to constantly return to the home screen is unacceptable.

I already figured out a workaround (as posted here: https://forums.androidcentral.com/ask-question/957336-black-screen-certain-apps-second-time-awaken-sleep-problem-after-android-pie.html?mn_qa=1).

Ok so good that issue settles in for you.. it will be helpful to anyone who play Pokémon games .. I don't see problem with browsers.. I tried wake, sleep about 5 times in a row.. always returned to where I was.. mine is pin locked with fingerprint locking with registered 3 fingers. When I unlock it unlocks as usual and return to browser.

Think rest of games will be fine unless it's Pokémon type...

Have a good day....

like i said before, the problem doesnt occur with a lock screen, only when going straight from sleep to app. Also, like i said...all games have this problem. I tried mc5 and two other games I downloaded long ago but never played (7 years from now, Innocent), all have the same problem.

Now i realise another problem is that the gps is not working properly anymore. Tried different settings but not solving the problem. Determining location using GPS only doesnt work, and using GPS + other tools doesnt update location properly (stuck in one place forever).

Putting a lockscreen is a big hassle and waste of time. My phone is always with me so there's no security reason to do so. As for the gps, I tried several methods and it seems to be better now. Not smooth like android 8, still have lags and jumps but better than not working at all. Thank you.

fingerprint option is no longer in my settings. I realised that after I updated to pie, but im not sure when it disappeared. If I go to settings -> support, there is an option to test fingerprint sensor. But after i put my finger on the sensor nothing happens.

And lock screen is indeed a big hassle. Its several seconds alright, but if you times that with the frequency... really wasting a lot of time. Like i said, I found a workaround to double tap the screen to turn it off, with the option to display animation/black screen before it turns off, hence solving the problem. Now I just need to readjust my muscle memory cuz im used to using the power button. But I will get a new phone soon anyway...looking at oppo reno 10x zoom. All my previous phones have been from sony, and lots of my family members also use sony under my recommendation. But that was years ago, sony phones are really not up to standard and way overpriced nowadays.

Atleast u solved your problem. But I didn't expect that leads to another issue of missing fingerprint scan. It's been reported before and I think that's probably related to regional build servers which might have given wrong build or some settings that disables it during the upgrade.. like windows 10 update bug . XZ premium is an amazing phone but can't believe lots of users had issues .. At some point u can try reinstalling stock firmware to fix fingerprint scan issue. Meanwhile try clearing cache and data of fingerprint ASM and fingerprint extension service in the system app list and restart to see if it enables fingerprint option.

And eh if moving from Sony, I recommend Samsung than oppo. Ya sure Chinese manufacturers attract by lot of never before features. it's upto u...

You aren't the only one to report this problem. It also affects the XZ1 and XZ1 compact. It also isn't only a problem when you have an app open. If you are on your home screen and you press the power button to turn on, then again to sleep, then again to turn on you can't swipe between screens and any widgets on the home screen, such as a clock or weather widget, won't update, yet the status bar at the top does update. Opening an app seems to restore normal functionality. Here are a few other threads that mention the problem. Sony just seems to be ignoring it.

/t5/Xperia-XZ1-Compact/Home-Screen-frozen-after-wakeup-since-Android-9/m-p/1371132#M4994

/t5/Xperia-XZ-Premium/Phone-won-t-swipe-between-home-screens/m-p/1370389#M17378

/t5/Xperia-XZ1-Compact/Weird-frozen-display-glitch-after-Pie-upgrade/m-p/1368789#M4903

/t5/Xperia-XZ1/XZ1-47-2-A-45-Latest-update-problems/m-p/1363771#M6030

Yes, I also just notice the stuck homescreen problem (particularly the clock) recently... But i think the black screen problem is the most annoying. Right now i use an app where the screen plays animation before turning off, and another app that lets me open this app thru pressing the camera button. In this way the camera button becomes the new power button. This tends to solve the problem...most of the time.

All these problems are with no lockscreen right. 3rd party apps has to run in background all the time ..kind of unnecessary.

Another thing I want to ask is can u try different home application? I mean any other home app to test these problems are linked with Xperia home app?

I know how it feels like , but alternatives, workarounds has to be used. I guess Sony is aware of this issue, but they are completely rearranging , reducing to half work force and remaining staff engaged in maintaining security patch updates..so avoidable bugs are treated minor. But think there will be a final pie update fixing all issues later ...

Mahesh, you should try removing your lockscreen and see how much easier things are that way. Wasting time with a swipe screen cannot be considered as a solution. The camera button as power button is the best workaround I found...althou i assume the camera button is quite fragile. And how about the speaker problem? Are they even trying to fix that?

Also, i switched to nova launcher the first time I had this problem (if thats what you meant)..same problem.

Same issue in all Snapdragon 835 devices of Sony I guess.

I don't have the speaker problem... I tried covering top and bottom simultaneously , same sound.. was listening to F1 race live feed. Since it's not everybody having it, it's a question why on certain handsets. Is it related to devices manufactured in specific period or certain region, no idea.

Actually it's like no lockscreen for me.. I press power button and gets unlocked like no lock screen as fingerprint sensor detects it fast. Also I enabled location based smart lock to disable lock when iam at home, it's not accurate but works most of time. This is device which costs 50000 I no way disabling all security.

Yes like u said the buttons are so delicate both power button and camera button. That's why iam using "ok Google" voice unlock so it turns on the screen just touch the power button without press and it's unlocked in no time. I was kind of giving feedback to Google to edit and put custom voice unlock keyword instead of less secure "ok Google" .

I even set Norton app lock which uses fingerprint to open apps.. it has widget which it's disabled while at home and turned on while outside. Banking applications and messaging apps always needed to be secured.. u know OTP weakness..

Anyway if there is theft , we don't get device back ,but atleast no one can access anything and if they manage to open lockscreen , wrong fingerprint readings takes selfie in Norton app lock before they plan anything else to completely ditch device.

I have seen older people using phones without lock screen but I never seen a single person using smartphone without a pattern lock atleast. And no iPhones I seen without a pin lock..

Well , eh the workaround of yours think it works good without any further issues. If u can mention the apps u use, then people who posted the same issues can make use of your solution for the time being also post it in their respective threads as a working workaround.

Two apps...screen lock pro and button mapper (paid version).

Seriously...lock screen is only needed if you think your device could get stolen or robbed. The chance of that is so low that its not worth having a pin or pattern lock. There was once when my little cousin wasted a huge amount of my in-game credits in the game mc5 (im f2p). He took my phone out of my bag and just randomly bought a bunch of stuff. Thats the only time when i wished i had a lockscreen. I did get those credits back later, however.
