I have recently bought one of the above, with the intention to use a different network operators SIM in the second slot when home in Australia, and a foreign SIM for/from the country I visit when travelling.

However, in setting up the phone, I am seeing some issues. But first, a question to check my understanding. From the Sony device manual, I have found:

One WCDMA network
One GSM network
One WCDMA and one GSM network
One LTE, one WCDMA and one GSM network

For each SIM card, you can set your device to switch automatically between mobile networks depending on which mobile networks are available where you are. You can also manually set your device to use a particular mobile network mode for each SIM card, for example, WCDMA or GSM.

Now, I take this to mean I SHOULD be able to have one SIM working on 4G/LTE or 3G/UMTS and the other on perhaps whatever the primary SIM isn't using, where signal is available for those networks? i.e If SIM1 is on LTE, SIM2 coudl use UMTS or GSM, and vice versa?

I can understand perhaps both SIMs not being able to use the same frequency or type of network at the same time, as there might be only one radio for each, but I assume it could use the combinations I have mentioned above just fine? Is my understanding correct?

If so, then my problem is as follows:

In an area where both carriers (Optus and Telstra, in my case) have available LTE and UMTS signals, I cannot get the second SIM to "work" or show signal when I have both enabled, and the network set to auto (i.e. LTE preferred, fallback to any other) for either SIM. The second SIM is forced into GSM-only mode, which is not what the above paragraph on networks suggests should be happening.

Given there are pretty much no 2G/GSM networks here any more, that's a bit of an issue.

Can anyone confirm how it shodul work, as dual SIM seems pretty useless if the second SIM can only run a network type being phased out globally!
