Z2 timer/countdown doesn't ring if screen is off or locked

How to reproduce:

Start the default clock app.
Set the timer/countdown to 5s.
Choose a sound for the timer/countdown that has a duration of at least 2s.
Start the timer.
Press the Power key to turn off the screen or to lock the phone.

Result:

After about 5s, the timer alarm sounds for about 0.5s and is mute afterwards. If there's music playing in the background (from the walkman app), you may get just a short 'blank' in the audio stream (also about 0.5s long).

This beahavior occurs...

... when the screen is off but the phone is unlocked.
... when the screen is off and the phone is locked.
... independend of the walkman app playing in the background.

Thies doesn't happen if the screen is on and the clock app is running in the foreground.

I've had no problems with the normal alarm (the ones you set to occur at a specific time).

What can I do?

Just tried that myself and you are correct... I also tried allowing the screen to turn itself off by setting the timer beyond my screen off time and the same thing occurs.

What software version are you currently running ?

I'm on the newest 23.0.1.A.0.167

I'm also running 23.0.1.A.0.167.

The strange thing is, the normal alarm seems not to be affected by this.

Agreed, I use the alarm everyday and it functions correctly... Not sure what other options to explore, but then again I don't really use the Timer but that doesn't mean it shouldn't work as it should

A colleague has a Z2 with the software version 17.1.2.A.0.314. For him, the timer works fine. This is probably a bug with the newer software versions.

Yes, your description of this problem is very accurate and it is very annoying. I use the timer frequently when cooking and this problem have caused several runied dinners already 😞 This reminds me of the sleep of death problem with xperia V, only this problem is consistent. Please fix this or provide a solution.

I have the same problem and I just can't stop myself thinking why is this problem still happening to us with such a huge company as SONY.. It's been months since this problem first noticed and still not fixed.. This kind of problems may seem like so little but it can make SONY loose custemers like me who are so annoyed by not feeling that they are cared at all..

Xperia Z3, 23.0.1.F.0.96, also the same problem.

when the timer goes off it makes a sound for about 1/2 a second, then goes silent.

Apparently, this problem has been going on since the Z2 model. Mine is a brand new Z5. Please Sony, fix this problem. It would also be great if instead of a sound notification, a vibrate and /or a screen notification would play instead. This problem also happens to the small app timer.

Hi Everyone,

in my Z3 compact and I have found the same problem. The alarm functionality works correctly but the timer does not play the sound if it expires while the screen is off. When I turn the screen on after it expired it starts to play the sound immediately and tells me proudly that the timer expired (some minutes/hours ago).

I have tried it

- in safe mode -> makes no difference.

- with stamina mode on and off -> makes no difference.

- in ultra stamina mode -> makes no difference

The only thing that helps is to keep the screen on even if there is no user activity, which could be a workaround for 2 ... 3 minutes but definitely a bad idea if you set the timer to let's say 1 hour.

I have also noticed that "small app"* timer works correctly. It plays the sound when the alarm expires even when the screen is off.

*In Z3 Compact it is accesible by pressing square button next to the home. Select the app with the dark red line on the top.

What I do not understand why is it still an issue? Briconaut posted the exact steps how to reproduce this issue almost 3 years ago. It affects not only all users of a single product line but all users of multiple product lines. It is clear for me that it is not the highest priority issue there is, but 3 years without a fix???

My question to SONY would be when should we expect a fix for the clock application?
