HXD870 Recorder handset not working

I have a Sony HXD870 DVD recorder it was bougt new but has not been used for about 8/10 years

I have found that the remote does not work even though it has new batteries fitted.

I may have got this wrong but I seem to remember having to key in a code using the buttons on my sony recorder remote (or is my memory playing tricks on me )

if I am wrong and I imagined keying in numbers on the keypad can someone point me into the direction of buying a new remote
