Syncing a new hand controller

I have purchased a new SONY Hand controller reference no RMT D250P in the hope that it would work on my SONY HD BOX reference no SVR-HDT500.
I don’t seem to be able to make the box come on or do anything with the new controller and wondered if you could help please.
