Register HDD - USB HDD not found

KD55 X7000E LED 4K Ultra HD (HDR) Smart TV faills to find a USB HDD on any of the USB ports when I try to register a recording device. A HDD with pre-recorded MP4 files reads those files just fine so the issue is not the USB ports. Is there a trick to it?

My HDD is brand new USB 3 1TB Toshiba. Have tried a USB 2.0 320GB - both formatted with NTFS file system.

This doesn't seem to be a UK model but you can find some info on compatible USB HDDs over on the Sony Australia support site here.

Thanks. Been there and done that. Both my HDDs meet the requirements. Just hoping that someone somewhere knows if there's some nuance that I need to know. Clutching at straws really.
