Bravia KD32W800 no program recording

My 2 year old JVC set made easy perfect recordings from Freeview onto a USB stick. The set developed freeze-up issues so I had to replace it. The Sony Bravia was a poor choice. TV via wifi only worked sometimes, some stations not at all (my broadband is fine). Then I connected and programmed Freeview (roof aerial) and suddenly the stations all responded. Command response is slow with constant pop-ups telling me it's connecting. The menu system is chaotic.

But the worst thing is there is no Freeview program recording system. I successfully formated a 32GB Toshiba USB stick but there is no way I can find to record on it. This is a basic requirement JVC does perfectly. On line I see explanations of how to record, using menus and remotes completely different to mine. Menu options for recording don't exist on my set. Someone blogged the Bravia turns itself on completely (sound & pic) for every programmed recording. Really??  The worst purchase I made in years and the last Sony.

To record on the TV you need an HDD, not a standard USB stick.

What a backward step!  This set, bought from a reputable local retailer, was not cheap. I did check it had USB recording ability. Responses to power-up and the menu system are very slow, usually with pop-up messages asking you to be patient.. Help menus list capabilities but offer no help. As a former telecoms designer, I'm not impressed.

As for buying an outdated clunky HDD box at considerable cost? Forget it.

@SkyNet404 Is taking about an external HDD, not a box of any sort.

as this connects via USB, the set certainly does have USB recording capability, but this is clearly shown as USB HDD (not stick) in all Sony’s supporting literature:-
