Remote Control for Camcorder HDR-PJ780VE is Not reliable

I have a SONY HDR-PJ780VE and the remote just doesn't work - unless you are so close that you might as well turn the thing on yourself!

It does not work if you are more than 5-6 feet away.  Then I lean forward toward the camcorder, then it will work.

Yes, I have put new batteries in the remote control.

I assume the remote is IR-based.

Did you check if the the emitter and the receiver is clean?

Also check that the IR receiver is not obstructed by parts of the camera or attached accessories (e.g. lens hood, tripod, microphone, cables...).
