Xperia P software update doesn't work

Hello,

I've received the notification that there is a software update (6.1.B.0.544) available for my Xperia P. The instructions say I have to use the Sony PC Companion software to do this. Whenever I try the software crashes my PC and the phone doesn't get updated. My PC is running Windows XP (SP3), has Java (JRE7) and I have disabled my antivirus (Kaspersky) and firewall. This is what happens:

1. I connect the phone to PC via USB.

2. PC Companion software (PCC) notices the phone and says there's an update available.

3. I click on 'Update'

4. PCC opens 'Phone Software Update' window with 4 steps (1. Start, 2. Prepare, 3. Update, 4. Finish). 1. Start is highlighted and it says my personal data will be kept, it should take around 30 minutes to update, I need an internet connection, and the software will be updated to 6.1.B.0.544 (from 6.0.B.1.564)

5. I click on 'Accept'

6. PCC opens '2. Prepare' window, states it's preparing the computer for the update and cycles through intialising and preparing stages.

7. PCC then says it is checking my phone and my phone switches off.

8. The software continues to be 'checking the phone' for several minutes after the phone powers off, then presents a screen displaying a series of steps to 'prepare the phone for the update': 1. Disconnect the USB cable from phone and computer, 2. Make sure the battery is at least 50% charged (it is), 3. turn off the phone and wait 5 seconds (the phone's already off though...), 4. Connect the USB to the computer, and 5. Press and hold the volume down button while plugging the USB into the phone.

9. I follow the steps above.

10. The phone shows the Sony logo then just displays the battery charging image and goes to sleep. The green LED comes on.

11. Nothing happens for a few minutes.

12. My computer hangs - completely freezes except for the mouse. The clock stops, I can't click on any buttons including the Windows Start Menu, Ctrl+Alt+Del doesn't work. I've tried leaving this for 45mins and there's no change. The only way to recover is to press the PC's reset or off buttons.

I've tried several times now - with and without my antivirus on, updated the java I had installed (I was on JRE6). To call this frustrating would be an understatement.

How do I make this work?

---------------------------

The thread now says this is assumed answered - this has still NOT BEEN ANSWERED! None of the suggestions work.

I'm really disappointed with Sony on this.

SUS doesn't work either. I've just tried, several times. It doesn't always freeze my PC like the PC Companion but it doesn't update my phone either.

do you get an error with SUS ?

No, it just keeps showing the image to demonstrate holding down the the volume button and inserting the USB cable.

update JAVA, uninstall and reinstall SUS > restart your PC > turn off your firewall and antivirus > run SUS and try again, remember that your PC will look for the drivers. also press the Volume down first then while still holding it connect the usb cable

I've already did a JAVA update before I down;oaded SUS. I'll try again though...

As suspected, no difference. I even removed any old JAVA instances so I only have the latest (v7 update 7) installed. UNinstalled and re-installed SUS (checked that was the latest version too).

Same problem. This time I did notice the notification bubble pop up saying that new hardware had been found - an SEMC flash device. Then nothing for 20 minutes. I then tried to open Chrome to reply to you and the computer froze (mouse still worked I just couldn't click on anything or use any keyboard controls).

it's your PC, is there a way you can borrow another PC?

I'll see if I can use a work one but they're quite restrictive. Failing that I'll have to beg some friends...

I wonder if it's something else, try this on your PC create a new administrator account > install sus, java and all that and try again
