I have tried to connect the digital optical output on my Bravia KDL-40W55OOU (fed by HDMI with Freesat and Amazon Fire) to a SMSL Sanskrit DAC, but can get nothing but a warbling sound via my speakers. Have tried 2 different optical cables with the same result. Anybody have the same problem - is there a solution?
Thanks in anticipation.
Hello @djgwilson,
maybe you have set the output to "subwoofer", so the TV just sends the lower frequencies via the optical output.
Since optical doesn't transfer any device info back to the TV, it doesn't know, that there is no subwoofer connected.

Hi Nic,
Thanks for your suggestion, but I have no subwoofer. Made no changes to the TV's audio output except to switch from TV speakers to audio system. Had it hooked up optically to a Yamaha soundbar a few months ago - worked fine then.
I have read somewhere that if sound is fed to the TV via HDMI the digital optical output from the TV will not work. Do you know if this is correct? Object was to get Amazon music out to my stereo system.
Hello @djgwilson,
thank you for your clarification that you previously had another sound system connected which worked as intended.

That would be counter intuitive - so no, that is not correct.

Thanks Nic. Sometimes the counter intuitive is correct! I don't think it is the DAC as the other inputs are fine.

Hello @djgwilson,
did you try to switch trough the different audio output formats for the optical output (or from the source device)?
- Nic
No, I had been thinking that the audio output from the TV is set to Dolby A and maybe the DAC can't handle it. When I get home I'll try changing the output. Thanks for the suggestion.
