PC works fine normal colour & contrast from Nvidia GT640M . Play a video and PC appears to revert to basic Windows Display adaptor. Use device manager to disable then enable Nvidia, system resets until next play of a video. Have reloaded a clean copy of Nvidia drivers to no benefit.
Hi Robert,
Well, it doesn't seem like this is a hardware issue, and given the fact that you tried everything related to the drivers, nothing more comes to mind other than following Sony's advice and performing a full recovery.
If you're going to do that, make sure your data's backed up first.

Thanks for your suggestion. I posed the problem to the VLC Videolan forum. An expert suggested.:
From within VLC go to Tools,Pref, Video, Output change to Direct X. from auto. Appears to prevent VLC from triggering the problem. Not that I undersatnd why this helps or why the problem occured in the first place. Windows media player still gives the same symptom. Cheers R
