I generally use mp4 quick and easy to convert it does support other variations some 264 one but im not sure which one and my converter has never got a h264 or x264 to work the resolution is really good on this phone for video conversions (1 of the only good things about the phone) depending on the original file i have mine set to 624x352 940kbps 23fps audio aac 48000hz 96kbps but if your original file is of a smaller size res etc do not make it larger always go slightly smaller as it will only make the file larger than it should be ie if the avi is 350mb and it comes out at 400mbs then you did something wrong, it may well play ok but you will be wasting space 350mb usually comes out at 300 for me but as i said each file has its own individual outcome... there is a player on the market called xyplayer i think that does avi but with large files it crashes sometimes.. hope that was of some help to you..
