Love the X10 but cannot get mediascape to work, get force close message each time. Sony not responded to any of my emails and when I called they were not that helpful, could only suggest I restore to factory settings. Do not really want to do that. Any help much appreciated, Thank you.

Did you get your phone from a different location then where you are located (import, purchase while traveling). I have seen situations where if you are in a country that does not have access to our PlayNow service, but your phone is designed to use PlayNow, you can get these errors.
To resolve: Enter MediaScape and immediately press MENU > SETTINGS. Uncheck the "Show online services" button so PlayNow will not load the next time you open MediaScape
Here is the best way to resolve this:
1. Set your time zone to a ‘positive’ value, for example CET time. (Settings->Data & time->Select time zone)
2. Start PlayNow from application tray.
3. Accept the update, and wait for the update to finish.
4. Now reset phone time to wanted time zone.
After your device is updated, you will not experience the issue again.

I have already tried the step 1 but how do i start the PlayNow because i am still having the same problem saying " the application playnow ...has stopped unexpectedly. please try again."
So, could you please help me out with this problem.
