I've just noticed that NFC icon doesn't appear on the status bar and in fact it doesn't work (I tried to activate it both from settings and from shortcut bar). Do you know if it is an upgrade issue?

No it doesn't
You might want to repair it with XC although it seems that you have other issues with your device prior to this.
