Hi all
Wondered if you can help as I'm struggling.
I received a text and email as follows, from my mobile carrier :
3G network will be switched off in November 2025. After that, i won't be able to make or receive calls, texts, or use mobile data. To stay connected, I'll need a phone that supports 4G Calling (VoLTE) and works with iD Mobile.
I was pretty shocked when I moved to ID mobile that I couldn't receive phone calls, and it turned out that's because Id mobile don't support volte on the xz2 compact.
But I've been surviving without phone calls, using WhatsApp.
My main worry about the change is that text messages will stop working.. Which I can't live without, because it's used so often for authentication.
I can't find volte settings on my phone, but I'm wondering if they'd only appear if I was with a carrier (using their sim) who support volte on my device
Volte is such a pain the way its currently set up.
Basically on older devices such as xz2 the volte activation is controlled by the network, and many networks had locked in ideas surrounding volte.
For volte to work on a specific network:
The phone must be running the firmware for that particular network or be purchased directly from that network.
In some case, having an unlocked to all phone running on region generic firmware would allow the volte to be turned on, but it was mostly used by iphones and samsungs, and even then it was down to each specific network if it even enabled the toggle.
With the 3g switch off fast approaching, I can see this becoming a regular issue.
Unfortunately, due to the previously mentioned control of the service by the networks, there's next to nothing that sony can do about it. Sorry to bear the news
Thanks for replying
It seems as though I have to ask each UK network if they'll support the xz2 compact for volte after the 3g switch off.
I expect the default customer service people won't know for sure.
It would be really useful if someone is successfully using volte in the UK on their xz2 compact, if they could tell me which network they're on
