I have an 55xd8599 linked to a virgin tivo box. When i press guide on the remote, i get the sony EPG, is there a way to change it so that i get the the Virgin guide layout when i press the guide button ?

The short answer is 'No'.
The long answer is you could if the TiVo ever got HDMI-CEC control:-

but it hasn't at the moment.
Or maybe you could stand the question on its head by using the TiVo remote to control the Sony TV?
though it won't control a whole lot, even if it works at all
Or maybe you could snag yourself a 3rd party learning remote, and control both devices that way?

Logitech are good, from £40 up, though there are other makes. And you will need to check both devices are covered; but with the right multifunction remote, you can then programme things so that choosing the TiVo guide would switch to the TiVo box and show you its guide, with a single button press, even if multiple steps are involved.
