I have a mains charger for my PRS505 reader. However the charge only lasts for about 8 pages. Does this mean the battery is kaputt and if so is it replaceable?

Are you using a Sony branded charger? Have you tried connecting it to a PC using the USB cable and seeing it the battery charges correctly?
Battery life of the PRS-505 is predicted to be at least 4 years so if your battery is not charging it is faulty and Sony should replace it.
The battery appears to be a mobile phone type and in a few years there are going to be lots of people asking this question. At present Sony USA are selling a Reader replacement battery for $70 which is very costly and I expect cheaper alternatives to be made available as soon as demand rises. They are already available in the USA for $22.95
