BDV-E4100 frozen/locked with flashing white LED - software update fail?

Got my EDV4100 home cinema theatre kit in April, and it's been pretty straightforward until today, pretty much six months to the day since I bought it.  Unfortunately, I think I've now fallen foul of a software update failure.

Since I tried to turn it on to watch TV five hours ago, I can't get it to do anything.  The remote control is useless. The buttons on the front of the machine do nothing, apart from the eject button, which sends out the DVD tray but won't take it back in.  The white LED light on the front blinks stradily on and off, about once per second, and while the display reads "TV", as it would when it was playing sound from the TV, no sound is coming out.  I even hear the speakers make the little pop noise they make before they spring into action, but nothing happens.  It's like it's frozen, before eventually it eventually puts itself into standby and powers down.  Turning it back on just starts the cycle all over again.

I've tried power cycling it by unplugging it for three minutes, but nothing has happened.  I've taken out all the cables and checked them, including the TOSLINK, but nothing changes.

There's not a problem with my Sony TV, which is displaying picture perfectly  I've got a signal splitter which goes to the LG TV in the kitchen via an HDMI, and that's playing both sound and picture.

The annoying thing is that since both devices are Sony, the compatibility which lured me to the Sony Home Theatre brand is now working against me, as I can't hear any sound from my Sony TV.  I'm having to increase the volume from the LG TV and blast it into the living room, which is going to make me very unpopular with my neighbours.

Can anyone suggest what might be going wrong?

Hi there

I don't think there's much to do apart from consulting a Sony service centre:

So my system, about 30 mins ago, has just unfrozen itself and started working as normal. After being frozen for 3 days. Weird!

Has anybody else's??

Hello, did you connect it to the internet by an ethernet cable or how did you make your equipment work, please tell us what steps you followed to solve the freezing problem.

I didn't do anything. I just left the system turned on with the flashing white LED and it suddenly started working as normal. Very strange.

How long has your system been frozen for?

It's already 4 days, mine also started working again so I did a factory reset and now it's frozen again, I really don't know what the problem could be anymore.

Why not get it checked as Win_88 mentioned? I believe that's your best option at this point.

Sorry to abandon the thread, and sorry so many of you are having the same trouble as I did.

Why not get it checked, you ask? In my case, because Sony expected me to pay to get it to them, expected me to pay for any faults they found, and no doubt would expect me to cough up to to return it to me. Given that the product was well under a year old, I don’t think that’s fantastic customer service. There was clearly a failure during the update, but nobody at Sony wanted to talk to me or offer remote help on a phone call or email - they just wanted me to send them my entire system back, at my expense.

I don’t know if going back to the retailers who sold you all your bricked systems is an option? As I said earlier, I went back to Amazon who agreed that the unit was useless, arranged a free courier collection for the next working day, and sent me out a replacement, which is still going strong with no issues, and proves that this is an excellent unit when it works. The software update which bricks the unit is clearly a problem for quite a few people indicates a fault with the product, and not anything we’re doing wrong.

well said nasmith. It's clearly a software problem and I think Sony should be doing more to help with the problem. Especially when the system costs £319. My system has just froze again and is again usless. I'm going back to Argos tomorrow to see if I can return it as I've had it 10 months.

Just wondering if anyone found a Solution to this problem without having to return the system? The Sony bdv-e2100 does exactly the same thing.
