My 46EX723 will allow USB HDD recording. Given that there is only a single tuner it doesn't seem a particularly useful feature though. However, being able to pause live TV would be useful. It's not clear whether this feature is built-in? If so, can you get away with using a Flash Drive (>=32GB) rather than a hard disk?
Thanks
Hi there
A 32GB or greater flash drive should work. However as the manual does not state anything in regards to pausing "live TV" therefore I can only conclude that it is not supported. The USB HDD recorder was never ment to replace the functions of a fully featured digital recording box.
Cheers
I don't know if it works with the Flash Drive (officially it should be an HDD), but if it works it supports Live TV pause (or at least it does on a W805 and I expects that the functionalities are quite the same)

Yes, I couldn't find anything either which was why I was asking the question. There's a comment here:
which suggests that it can't be done, yet the review of the 55EX723 here:
http://www.digitalversus.com/tv-television/sony-bravia-kdl-55ex723-p10615/test.html
states: "...the EX723 has several new features, including timeshifting, allowing you to pause live TV and record the rest of the programme to a USB device..."
So it's anyone's guess!

I also saw that digitalversus site, however you gotta relise though that those types of sites are a mash-up of various other sites, and I doubt the information came from official resources either.

Thanks, I'd missed that one which looks pretty definitive. I'm at a loss to know why Sony went to the bother of implementing recording in hardware if they're were only prepared to make a rather half-hearted attempt on the software side of things.
I can only assume that this was Sony's first attempt (2011 models) at integrating basic USB recording. Also in 2011 they had a fully featured PVR recorder out on the market (SVR-HDT500 and 1000), and wanted to sell the those. Therefore the attempt at USB recording was probably never ment to replace the recorders (and hurt sales).
After that (2012 onwards), Sony never released any further equipment (PVR's). And therefore introduced the "pause live TV" function. See HERE for instructions on a 2012 model.
Thats all - just best guess
One fast check that you may do (if you don't have any spare flash or HDD to verify directly on the tv) is that in 2013 TV model remote there is a specific "Pause TV" button: do you have it?

No, there's just the standard 'Pause' button. TBH I'm not sure I see why they need to have a separate 'Pause TV' button, I would have expected the standard one to work - but obviously there's no way to test that without a drive plugged in. Though from what has been said it seems highly unlikely that it would work.
