FW11E Sound has suddenly stopped working

Hi, please help me!
Only got my laptop on Saturday, switched it on, put broadband on, tried it out etc....ALL working fine. Switched it off.
Sunday, I switch it on and there is NO SOUND! the speakers are working, but only if I put my ear ON the speaker, the I can here it tiny bit. All volume controls are up, it says its all working fine, we've uninstalled and re-installed drivers for the sound, still not working.
Have tried everything we can think if.
Tried ringing SONY but they are rubbish.....been put on hold for HOURS and not even spoken to any1 yet!
please help! we haven't installed or changed anythng apart from doing recommended updates from vaio.
any ideas on getting sound back?!?!?!?!

Have you checked audio settings are set to speakers/headphones.?

To check do the following..

Click Start, then Control Panel.

Click Hardware and Sound, then Manage Audio Devices.

In the sound window click on Playback or Recording tabs to change audio settings..
