Last night I rented a Blu-ray movie for the first time despite having my laptop well over a year now. All excited I put it in and... nothing. "No application recognises this format!" (paraphrasing). I had also bought a HDMI cable yesterday and was annoyed to find that it only plays pictures but that the sound was coming from my laptop! Is that all there is? Wikipedia doesn't seem to think so: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High-Definition_Multimedia_Interface
So turning to the Sony Vaio website I couldn't find a way to search the discussion forums so I was glad to find this page all about Blu-ray and even better, my exact model: VGN FZ11Z was one of only two listed:
http://club.vaio.sony.co.uk/clubvaio/GB/en/entertainment/bluray/
unfortunately when you actually go to the link, it's a broken link! They unhelpfully ask you to check where you have typed in the page address!
So my questions are:
What software should be associate with playing Blu-ray disks and do I have to download it?
Can a HDMI connection transport Audio & video and what was I doing wrongly if so?
Any way to search these forums? Am I just missing the glaringly obvious SEARCH button!
Any help gratefully appreciated.
A.

Hi andoni77ad,
Have you tried playing your BD using Win DVD BD.?
For your audio have you switched the playback to digital.?
To do this go to Control Panel then select Hardware and Sound and finally Manage Audio devices..
In the Sound Options window select the Playback tab and then set the default to SPDIF/HDMI.

I clicked on the link above and the web page opens correctly..
For the search use the following link to view the sticky post: Is there a search facility on the forum ?
My WinDVD BD was not installed properly and so I have to either re-format or buy it from the makers. Since I'm now out of warranty I think I can only buy from makers. Hoping Microsoft's Silverlight might be the answer to my prayers!
If you did not create the recovery disc's you're Vaio has a hidden HDD recovery partition so as long as it has not been deleted you should be able to recover your Vaio back to the original installed OS and programs just as it was when you first used your Vaio.
To do this Start your Vaio and when you see the Vaio logo screen press F10 repeatedly this normally would start the recovery process..
I'm not resorting to that now though because I would be days getting my laptop back to where it is now with so many programs installed and configured just as I need them.
