That's the Calendar widget, it shows your upcoming plans. You can disable it in the home screen by press 'up' on the direction pad, then press the left soft key to manage your widgets, and then press the 'center' key to hide the Calendar widget.
Is there a quick way to get back to the home screen when you are on the internet or on other pages, as I have to keep pressing the back button to get there?
Yes, press the "power/end call" button. That should take you directly to the homescreen. The same button also functions as a shortcut key to minimize or forcefully close any java application.
