Help!!!

I just brought a sony xperia L of someone on face book, the phone was on and working when he gave it to me so i thought it was all ok, I got it home and it had turned itself off, I managed to get it to charge and it was fine it got to about 50% and turned off again so put on charge no light came on, so i brought a new battery charged straight away and thought it was going to be ok but with new battery got to 50% and went off same problem can anyone tell me whats happerning or what might be whats wrong with it thank you.

Try performing a system repair - This will factory reset your phone

Switch off your phone and unplug from Pc (Hold volume up and power for around 10 seconds)
Start PC Companion and select Support zone then Update my phone/tablet then in Blue Repair my phone/tablet and follow the onscreen instructions - When prompted connect your phone still switched off holding volume down or back button - This should start the repair or reformat process

If you are using Windows 8/8.1 or a 64bit operating system then adjust the settings for PC Companion and run in compatibility mode and chose Windows 7 or XP

tried that but it will not recognise the usb in my phone, unless it has a new battery in it

Have you checked that the Flashmode driver is installed because if it is and your phone isn't being recognised when entered into Flashmode then I fear that there is a hardware fault

Just to check with the phone switched off and holding volume down and connecting the USB cable you are saying nothing is detected?
