Transferring text/sms to PC

I am probably being dumb...but having broken my Xperia Z screen yesterday while away on holiday I am looking for a way to transfer and read the text messages that are still coming in (I can't switch the phone off) and am struggling to find. Backup through the companion gives me files I can't open...can anyone help? Surely it must be possible without using one of these non-Sony companies that want to take my money for software i will probably not need? Thanks!

You can sync them to Gmail or you can use MyPhoneExplorer

That's going to be complicated, does PCC recognize the phone or not at all? are you able to backup anything?

Yes, i have dragged all my phtos out and used companion to backup texts...but I don't know how to read thenm. Presumably the backup is the wrong kind of file - but I am just surprised it isn't as easy to drag the texts across as it is with the photos...

You could try a MHL cable and then connect your phone to a Tv - If the touch still works then you would be able to do as Uli suggested like backing up to Google or you could then install backup apps and then save these to a folder you can find from your Pc as you will then need to reconnect your phone to a Pc
