If I go to the spell checking settings at system > languages and input > advanced > spell checker, it says "not selected" and if I try to set the default spell checker by tapping it, I get an empty list.
Can anybody help, please?

Hi @PeteC ;
I think you must install the Gboard (Google Keyboard) to have the Google Spell Checker installed and have it selected in the settings (I think that is why I have it for selection in my Xperia 1 with the Gboard and it is not available from stock in the XZ Premium or XZ1 who has the Swiftkey board).
Hello @PeteC;
I think you need to first download a spellchecker from the Play Store and then you can select it from the settings (at least I think I tested it that way once).
Thanks for the reply but all the apps I've found on the play store seem to be standalone ones that you can paste or type text in to check, rather than providing a serivce for the Android system. My other devices have a "Google spell checker" selected but I can't find that.

Thanks @NunoSEN2, rather spookily I'd just worked that out (I was comapring with another device that was working)! You just need to have it installed, you don't have to use it or even enable it as an input method. I tried Sony support before coming here and they suggested a factory reset - very glad I didn't do that.
