You don't need to root to flash newer firmware directly by Flashtool and XperiFirm. I do this frequently so I don't wait for my customization update to be released. If you are too excited to get this update, head to XDA-developers.com and read some guides about flashing firmwares, should be easy and straight forward. Root gives you more control on system files and settings, but I don't suggest doing it if you're not too comfortable with messing with your phone as it might brick eventually.

Contact Sony Xperia support it could be an issue with the server.

That doesn't make sense, maybe they didn't understood the issue, you have the latest update, you can also check

1. Settings
2. About phone
3. Software update

Just keep checking on PC Companion, sometimes servers get overloaded by the amount of people updating at the same time.

To make sure, do you own more that one Xperia? Did you flash a different firmware recently?
