Is this something that started to occur very recently, for example after you updated your phone or installed a new application?
First of all I'd recommend that you try and connect another pair of headphones/headset to your phone and see if those are recognized. An easy way to see if the phone recognizes them is starting up the FM radio application > connect your headphones/headset and see if you still see the message that you should connect a pair of headphones.
If there is no change, try resetting the Smart Connect application in your phone. To do that go to Settings > Apps > Smart Connect > Clear data > OK. Once this has been done, restart your device.
