Not playing selected phone or messaging ringtone

Hi anyone! 

Have had my Z Ultra since October 2013 and suddently it is not alerting me with my chosen ringtone for either calls or messages, although the ringtone is selected in the ringtone list for both applications.  This hasn't always been the case, but I can't find any reason why it has stopped working.

In addition, I have an icon in the status bar that doesn't appear in the userguide - perhaps it is this which is stopping the ringtone from playing...?  The icon is an X with a filled isosceles triangle, with its smaller angle pointing to the right, in the left hand area and two very much smaller triangles in the north and south areas with their small angles pointing to the left.  I have no idea what it means.

Can anyone help with this mystery?  Would be grateful.

Go to settings-apps-all-media storage,clear defaults.

Thank you so much for responding. However, when I follow your instructions to Apps, the only list I am presented with is headed Downloads and the list comprises: Browser, Diagnostics, Google Play Services, Office Suite and Wisepilot.  I can't find my way to media storage.   Are you able to help further?

Swipe to right,there is all tab.

Thanks a lot for your help;  have got my head around things a bit more now, but do not feel the Xperia user guide is clear enough on a lot of issues - assumes knowledge wich some of us just don't have, and at 73 are unlikely to acquire any time soon.
