Brand new Z5 Compact out of box. Switched from iOS and thus used iSMS2Droid/SMS Backup & Restore-trick to transfer text conversations to android. Worked like a charm apart from the fact that the profile pictures i messages are not the same as in phone book. Not a major issue but quite annoying.
I have tried the following
1. Delete conversation, delete messenger data & cache, restart, write new message - fawlty profile picture comes back
2. Delete contact in phonebook, create new contact with new picture - does not sync
I notice that if I click fawlty profile picture in messages I get transfered to a contact which is not in my phone book, while if I click a correct profile picture in messages I get transfered to the proper contact.
So does anyone have idea at all how to get this to work correctly?
Go back to factory settings is an option I guess but I'm worried the messages are synced somwhere so nothing will change by the time I come back.
I run Nova Launcher but don't quite think that matters.

You could backup all your contacts with Gmail > on your computer edit them > delete all the contacts from your phone > restart the phone > resync your Gmail contacts.
Thanks for the suggestion, I had not noticed that option.
I think it sorted some contacts out but most of them are still fawlty.
Tried it, did nothing.
However I now noticed that at least some profile pictures switch between fawlty and correct pictures at restart of phone.
This is odd indeed. Looked into Gmail contacts to see if there are any conflicting contacts there but no.
I am guessing the pictures come from (meta?-)data extracted during the transfer of messages from iOS. I do not like this at all.
Any other ideas would be appreciated.

I don't believe that the error originates from phone book contacts or Gmail contacts as these two always look as expected and seem to sync properly. I think the problem lies is messanges itself. I have now deleted all conversations in messanges to see if that helps. It'll take a while to confirm as I need to get conversations going with quite a few people to verify. I post back in a while.
I have tried the following:
- installed Google Messenger, deleted data from default messenger, restarted, chosen Google Messenger as default - wrong pictures show up again.
- Deleted all conversations along with files and folder created on phone during the transfer process, deleted data from messenger, restarted - wrong pictures again
- contacted developer of iSMS2droid who claims this is impossible using his app as pictures should not transfer with the conversations.
