oz = Australia?

if you bought the active in the UK and then you moved to Australia then the issue could be the 3G frequencies not being compatible, if so, your coworkers/friends could still have coverage but you don't since they still have access to their 3G network.

http://www.accesscomms.com.au/reference/mobnet.htm As you can see, you should be getting a GSM (2G) signal on your phone with Telstra, since it's a quadband phone, so I suggest you try one of your friends' SIM cards and see if the same thing happens.

Well it appears that the problem lies with the fact that your phone's 3G frequency is incompatible with that of Telstra's, for which there's nothing you can do about. However, the fact that you're not even receiving a 2G (GSM) signal, means that either there isn't one in that area, or that your phones's network settings have been set to 3G (UMTS) only, so please check and make sure that this is set to receive both 2G and 3G, or 2G only, since this is the only service you're likely to receive. Let me know if that's the case.
