No TV output through Home Cinema speakers

I've just connected a BDVE370 home cinema system to my KDL40EX503 TV. Both are 'Bravia Sync' devices. I can play DVD audio and music (via iPod through the surround-sound system, but TV sound refuses to play through them - I can only get TV sound by switching the setup to play through the TV speakers. I can't believe you have to manually switch the audio settings every time you swap between TV and DVD, etc? Any thoughts, anyone?

In case it's relevant, in the HDMI Setup, when I view the HDMI Device List, it shows the following:

Turn connected devices on and select "Enable" to activate Control for HDMI with compatible Devices

     Devices                 Input                  Audio System     Type

Player 1                  HDMI 1            Connected          BD System

Audio System          HDMI 1                                     BD System

So, is the Audio System (second line) somehow not connected from the TV's point of view? If so, how do I Enable it?

Having the exact same problem with a blu-ray BVDIZ1000W through my 46 in Sony TV. Problem is the ARC, the audio return channel. Apparently most sony tv's over one year old are not ARC compliant. You will have to get an additional cable to sort it out.

I'm starting to think that way. But: my TV was bought less than a month ago and is a 2010 model, so I would have thought it WAS ARC compliant?

I have a similar problem. I have a KDL37EX503 TV connected to a BDV-E370 home cinema system using HDMI 1. In default set up I get sound transmitted through the home cinema, using the HDMI ARC. Problem comes that after a few minutes, the sound stops coming out and only thing that changes things is to power off (from remote) the BDV-E370 and manually switch the TV speakers back on.

I cannot diagmose whether this is a fault in the TV or the BDV. I recently upgraded the BDV to latest firmware (in the hope that the "HDMI improvements" would include a fix for this), but the problems seem to be worse now. I notice there's a firmware upgrade for the TV now, but this only claims IPTV fixes.

I've updated the software on both TV and home cinema, same result. I've never had ANY sound through the cinema speakers from the TV.

After some more poking around, I'm a bit worried to read the following from Sony's own website - will buying an optical cable solve anything?

http://support.sony-europe.com/tutorials/tvhc/connectivity/connectivity.aspx?site=odw_en_GB&m=KDL-32...

"Digital optical connector has the same functionalities, except that the signal is carried through optical fiber.
Note: A Digital Optical connection cannot transmit the new HD sound formats like DTS HD, Dolby True HD etc"

Check out this post - people solving ARC problems with a change of HDMI cable.

Doesn't answer your question I'm afraid, but might be worth getting hold of some different cables to test?

I might try that.

It seems that only HDMI 1.4 supports ARC - see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDMI

And yet, on the Sony product page about HDMI cables, they sell both (very expensive) HDMI 3 and HDMI 4 cables, with no mention of ARC and the fact that some of those cables won't do what you might expect!

Tried another HDMI cable - and it works!! Replacement was only a £5 one that came with the home cinema system
